The Price Sheet Is the Last Thing That Should Decide a 3PL Search
A brand collects quotes from four 3PLs, ranks them by price per unit, and picks the second cheapest. Three months later, the same brand is emailing an account manager who takes two days to respond about a discrepancy that's costing them sales every hour it stays open. The price sheet predicted none of that.
Pricing Converges. Operations Don't.
Competent 3PLs serving the same category land within a narrow range of each other on price per unit, storage, and pick-and-pack fees. What doesn't converge is how fast a warehouse tells you something went wrong, how a kitting error gets handled, or whether an account manager treats a Saturday stockout as an emergency or a Monday problem. Those differences show up after the contract is signed, when switching costs real money and real time.
The Sales Process Is the Only Free Trial You Get
How a 3PL behaves during the sales process is the best data available before signing anything. A sales team that gives straight answers to technical questions, connects you with a named account manager instead of a rotating rep, and shows a live dashboard instead of a screenshot is showing you how they operate day to day. A sales team that dodges specifics or won't commit to a follow-up date is showing you that too.
What to Evaluate Before Price
Three things predict the relationship better than the price sheet:
- How a prospective partner answers a hard operational question, not a sales question, during the first call
- Whether you can talk to a current client without going through a curated reference list
- Whether the dashboard demo is live data or a static screenshot
Why This Matters More as a Brand Scales
A brand doing 200 orders a week can absorb a slow account manager. A brand doing 5,000 orders a week during a launch cannot. Kadia builds every new client relationship around a dedicated account manager and a live dashboard from day one, because the operational relationship is the product. The per-unit rate is a billing detail underneath it.
